What is Ribose ?

Ribose is a carbohydrate, or sugar, used by all living cells and is an essential compound in energy production.

For many years, commercially produced ribose has been used by pharmaceutical companies to make riboflavin (an essential B-complex vitamin) and as an ingredient in certain pharmaceutical compounds, including anti-viral drugs.

In our bodies, the foods we eat are digested, carried to our cells through the bloodstream as nutrients and are then converted into ATP. ATP is the major energy source for all cells and can only be formed by the cells themselves. Ribose is a critical compound that cells use to convert nutrients into ATP. Without ribose, ATP production cannot occur.

A normal, healthy body contains all the ribose it needs for everyday life. While we have enough ribose for normal living, certain conditions can dramatically lower the body’s ATP level, which lowers the body’s ribose supply and its ability to produce adequate ATP levels. Conditions causing ATP depletion

ATP and Ribose

Ribose is an essential ingredient used to build and recycle ATP, ADP and AMP. ATP is primarily produced by individual cells.

The process of making new ATP is known as de novo synthesis; the recycling process is known as salvage. Ribose is needed for both.

To begin either process, ribose is converted to a molecule called PRPP. Like ATP, PRPP must be formed by the cell itself, and PRPP must be present in the cell for either ATP salvage or de novo synthesis. Ribose must be present to form PRPP.

During strenuous exercise or in conditions caused by poor circulation, the cell’s entire supply of PRPP can be used up as the cell tries to recycle its energy-producing compounds. If ribose is available, the cell immediately converts it to PRPP, but like PRPP, ribose is available in a limited supply.

The body makes ribose from glucose, but the process is slow and requires even more of the cell’s energy, at a time when energy may be in short supply. This glucose-to-ribose production process may take several days, and that is why it takes so long to fully restore energy levels in the heart and muscles after exhaustive exercise or ischemia.

Decades of scientific research clearly show that ribose is absolutely, unequivocally required to conserve energy-producing compounds in cells or to manufacture new compounds when these are lost. Research also shows supplemental ribose speeds PRPP production, which in turn increases ATP production.
